TVC Backflow
Protect your property with TVC backflow and TMV valve testing and maintenance
Backflow or incorrect water temperatures can present serious health and safety hazards to you and anyone else on the premises. For this reason, it is essential to have your backflow devices and thermostatic mixing valves (TMV) inspected, tested and maintained regularly. These devices play an important role in preventing backflow and controlling the temperature of your water supply.
At Mario’s Plumbing & Drainage, we are experts in TVC backflow prevention and TMV valve testing. Backflow prevention and regular TMV testing ensure that the equipment operates correctly, keeping your family or clients safe. With years of experience maintaining these devices, our plumbers have all the skills, knowledge and replacement parts required to service your plumbing systems.

Backflow Prevention
Backflow happens when your water flows backwards against the usual flow. Backflow is hazardous because the water contains germs and other harmful substances. Having a backflow device installed is a requirement in Australia. This is to ensure that no one is exposed to harmful contaminants.
Backflow happens when your water pressure is affected by a break in your water main or when the water outlet is higher than the water main. You can also experience a backflow if you use water at a higher pressure than the pressure supplied by the local water authority.
While inspecting your backflow devices, our experts recommend also testing your TMVs to ensure you have a constant water temperature even when the water pressure changes.
Thermostatic Mixing Value (TMV)
The Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) blends hot and cold water to control your water outlet temperatures to safe and comfortable levels. The TMV valve reduces the risk of scalding from hot water or thermal shock from instantly switching to cold water.
TMV devices are designed to shut down if the cold or hot water supply fails, ensuring you are never met with scalding or freezing water from your taps or showers. This protects you from dangerous high hot water temperatures that can cause burns or scalds and thermal shock from freezing cold water.
TMV devices must be installed with preset temperatures by a qualified plumber and inspected annually as per Australian standards. Regular inspections and testing ensure that your TMV valve is working properly and is set at a safe temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should a TVC backflow device be tested?
Australian standards require that TVC backflow prevention devices and thermostatic mixing valves be tested and serviced at least once a year. However, if you notice any signs of damage, temperature fluctuations or backflow you should contact Mario’s Plumbing & Drainage ASAP for advice and repairs.
What temperature should a thermostatic mixing valve be set to?
A TMV valve should be installed and preset by a qualified plumber to a safe temperature that does not exceed 45 degrees Celsius. If your TMV is showing a higher temperature it may be malfunctioning or has been tampered with and requires servicing from a qualified plumber.
Can I maintain my TVC Backflow system myself?
No. While you can do regular checks on your backflow device and TMV yourself to keep an eye out for damage or malfunctions, installations, servicing and maintenance can only be completed by experienced plumbers.
Do I need a thermostatic mixing valve?
TMVs are an important safety feature for plumbing systems, however, they are not required for residential properties as you will have a tempering valve. TMVs offer added protection for properties that use large amounts of water or cater to high-risk persons, such as children or the elderly. For this reason, many commercial properties, such as schools, childcare centres, hospitals, nursing homes, shopping centres and hotels are required to have a TMV installed.
Tempering valve vs TMV?
Both tempering valves and TMVs adjust the amount of hot or cold water released from your system via a slide valve to provide a certain temperature of water to your taps or showers. Tempering valves are required for residential properties, while TMVs are required for commercial properties where high-risk persons may be present.
Tempering valves are accurate to around 3℃ +/- of the set temperature. A TMV can keep the water to 1℃ +/- of the set temperature and respond faster to changes, making it safer for high-risk situations or properties with high water usage.
